Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this special day. Today, you are part of something truly extraordinary.
When I first told my students that people from Japan and all over the world would join our festival, they thought it was impossible. They said, "We're too small for that. It would take a miracle." But I asked them, “Why do we hold this festival? Is it for selfish reasons?” No, our goal is to share the joy of ikebana. Ikebana helps us connect with each other and with nature. It also gives us moments of peace and reflection, which are important for our mental health and caring for the environment. When our intentions are sincere, I believe good things happen, and we meet amazing people.
But organizing the Wa Melbourne Ikebana Festival 2024 was tough. We faced higher costs, fewer helpers, misunderstandings, and rejections. There were times when we almost gave up.
Each time we faced a challenge, we asked ourselves why we started Wa. We did it to support new teachers who had few chances to work as professional instructors or florists. The truth is, the ikebana market in Australia is so small, and the number of practitioners hasn’t grown much in the last 50 years.
There are many ways to help our teachers and promote ikebana. Wa may not be the only way or even the best way, but creating an international ikebana festival in Melbourne was the most challenging and exciting option for us. We wanted to offer a variety of ikebana events that many people could enjoy for free or at reasonable prices, but it wasn’t easy.
Interestingly, when we were clear about our motives, new ideas came to us, and we met people eager to help.
First, Oshun Tsukagoshi agreed to join us. Some may wonder how I convinced such a renowned artist to come to Melbourne with 22 other top ikebana artists. The truth is, I didn’t have to convince him at all. When I visited his exhibition in Takasaki, he instantly agreed to be part of Wa. I told Oshun that Wa is a small festival with big dreams. We don’t just want to preserve tradition; we want to explore new possibilities for ikebana today. He said, “So you’re from Melbourne, not Sydney? Okay, I’ll help you. I’ve always wanted to go to Melbourne.” And just like that, we were lucky to be in Melbourne. Sorry, Sydney people!
Next, my dear friend Hiroe Swen offered to have her first exhibition in Melbourne in 50 years as part of Wa—another prestigious addition to our festival. When I told her, “But we are not the National Gallery of Victoria,” she simply replied, “I know, but I want to be part of Wa.” They were the words from this international artist.
I spent two weeks with Hiroe in July this year. One of the key lessons I learned from her is that art is a path to personal growth. To create great art, you must grow as a person.
This reminded me that in Japan, ikebana was once seen as a form of spiritual training. It’s not just about art and design but about personal development. At Wa, I hope you enjoy the beautiful artwork and take the chance to interact with these exceptional artists. You may realize that great art comes from great people.

A special thank you to Mr. David Limbrick for officially opening this international festival, to our sponsor, Metascent, and to all the international and domestic exhibitors.
